Stories of hope
Survival is not the end of the story — it's the beginning of reclaiming a life.
Every survivor's journey deserves to be told with dignity. These are stories of courage, healing, and hope — proof that what happened to someone does not have to define who they become. If you are walking a hard road right now, we hope you find something here that helps you feel a little less alone.

Theresa Flores
Theresa Flores is a survivor of human trafficking who turned her experience into a lifelong mission to protect others. Today she is a nationally recognized advocate, author, and the founder of The SOAP Project — and living proof that survivors can not only heal, but lead.
Her story
The nightmare
As a high school sophomore new to a Detroit suburb, Theresa was a teenager simply trying to fit in. A trusted-seeming older classmate offered her a ride home — an ordinary kindness that became the doorway to two years of unimaginable harm. She was drugged and assaulted, and hidden images were then used to coerce and control her.
For two years she was secretly exploited and sold by an organized trafficking ring, all while living at home and going to school. Her grades fell. Her behavior changed. The warning signs were there — but at the time, almost no one understood them as signs of trafficking. She lived in fear, threatened into silence to protect her family.
When her family relocated, the immediate nightmare ended — but, like so many survivors, she carried it alone and never reported what had happened. Her story is a powerful reminder of why awareness matters: the signs of trafficking are often hidden in plain sight, and recognizing them can change — and save — a life.
“Trafficking happens in our own neighborhoods, to kids who look just like ours. Awareness is the first step toward making sure no child has to suffer in silence the way I did.”

From surviving to leading
Redemption
Theresa did not let her past have the final word. She founded The SOAP Project — Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution — turning her pain into protection for others. The project distributes millions of bars of soap to motels and hotels, each one labeled with the National Human Trafficking Hotline, placing a quiet lifeline directly into the rooms where victims are most likely to be.
Her organization coordinates outreach at major events and trains hotel and motel staff to recognize the signs of trafficking — building a network of everyday people equipped to notice, and to help. What began as one survivor's resolve has become a movement that reaches across the country.

Why we share these stories
Stories carry hope from one survivor to the next.
We share Theresa's journey — with her dignity at the center — because survivors tell us, again and again, that knowing someone else made it through gave them the courage to take their own first step. You are not defined by what was done to you. Healing is possible. A future is possible. And you do not have to walk toward it alone.
You are not alone
If any part of this story feels like yours, reach out.
You don't have to have the right words. You don't have to be sure. You can simply say hello. Whatever you're carrying, you can set a little of it down here — gently, and on your own terms.
This is confidential and safe.
You don't have to share more than you want. Tell us only what feels okay. There are no wrong answers, and you can stop at any time. If you ever need to leave this page quickly, use the Quick Exit button at the top right — or just press Esc.
In immediate danger? Call 911. For confidential help any time, call the NCMEC 24-hour hotline: 1-800-843-5678.
